Introduction
In August of this year the Bahamas embraced the opportunity of the decade when we hosted the’ Miss Universe Beauty Pageant 2009’. For a developing country of our size and limited resources to, firstly, attract and successfully host the prestigious ‘Miss Universe Pageant’ was an accomplishment which should make us all proud to be Bahamian. The Valley Boys believe the hosting of ‘Miss Universe’ was one of the most significant events to occur in the Bahamas in 2009. Therefore, our Boxing Day presentation will showcase the splendour of the pageant and the significance of the pageant to the entire Bahamas.
For many years the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has been marketing and promoting the Bahamas as more than just Nassau, Paradise Island and Freeport, therefore the brand name ”The Islands of the Bahamas” was introduced reinforce this strategy and to inform the world that the Bahamas is a country or tourist destination of many different Islands all unique in character. Indeed the current Minister Tourism while he was Director of Tourism made this strategy a priority. The hosting of ‘Miss Universe 2009’ gave our tourism professionals and the country the opportunity to ‘show-off’ all of the’ Islands of the Bahamas’ to the world as we packaged the event not just as a Beauty Pageant but as a promotion of the Bahamas.

As gracious hosts, the Bahamas was given the opportunity to expose its natural beauties to several markets around the world the world, mostly the USA, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia as ‘Miss Universe’ is today the second most watched international beauty pageant in the world, reaching a global audience close to 1 billion people. More than eighty international delegates participated in this year’s event. The contestants began arriving on August 1st, 2009 and each of them received a warm Bahamian welcome. An elaborate itinerary was planned for them which took them to the various Islands of the Bahamas and major attractions in Nassau. Our Boxing Day presentation displays every aspects of the contestants stay in the Bahamas: their stay at the Venue Atlantis, Paradise Island; their excursions to the Family Islands; tours of Nassau; Photo Shoots; entertainment; culture; Location Filming; the pageant events – the swimsuit competition and the National Costume Competition and the grand finale of them all – the night of the Pageant. Execution of Theme Join the Valley Boys as we portray in costume, music and dance the beauty, magnificent colours, splendour and warm hospitality of the Islands and people that make up the Bahamas that the contestants, International Celebrities and guests of the Pageant experienced while in the Bahamas. Tour the Ardastra Gardens, Fort Charlotte, Clifton Heritage Site and Sacred Space, Visit Arawak Cay (Fish Fry), Visit the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, pay a Courtesy Call on the Governor General, enjoy a Tea Party at the Government House, shop Downtown Nassau and view a Display of Bahamian Arts and Crafts in Rawson Square, experience excursions to Exuma, Bimini , Harbour Island, Grand Bahama and Abaco. |
Banner – ‘Atlantis Plays Host’
The banner depicts the magnificence of Atlantis, Paradise Island, where the Miss Universe 2009 pageant was held. Three (3) majestic seahorses can be seen drawing the shell carriage of King Neptune. Our special guest, who is a Miss Universe contestant, is being taken to the pageant with all the pomp that is befitting our queen. King Neptune, the mythological ruler of Atlantis, proudly gazes at the splendour before him. He sits beneath the great dome above the lobby of the Royal Towers that dominates the skyline on Paradise Island. An array of spectacular shells and sea life, for which Atlantis is world renowned, flank the shell carriage. Atlantis welcomes the Miss Universe pageant!
Overall Group Costume – the costumes portrayed in this category depict the many marine treasures unique to the Bahamas, our Blue Waters, Fish and Shell Life as well as the unique beauty of each Island. All of these positive aspects of the Bahamas were experienced by the contestants and by the world during the Live Broadcast on NBC and through the extensive media coverage given to the Bahamas during the month of August 2009.

Andros Welcomes Miss Universe 2009- “Swimming in the Blue Hole is a Must”: The concept of this costume is based on the unique nature of Andros Wild life and its pristine Blue Holes.
Accompanying this costume will be three beautiful ladies with coordinated attire.

Abaco National Park- Features the Bahama Parrots, the light house and sailing of the island, accompanied by A contestant in the waters of Abaco.

“Best Costume” Cream of da Crop” – features a contestant in a costume on display and the background of underwater beauty

“Tour Of Nassau” – Miss Venezuela as she toured the streets of Nassau when she visisted the island on a horse and carriage.

” A Governor’s Welcome” Tea Party- Features the tea party that was held at the government house for the contestants.

“Dive In” Stuarts Cove- The underwater experience the contestants had at the dive sight.

“Bimini Blue” – Shows the marlins and the deep blue water around the island as well as the fountain of youth and the shipwreck surrounding the island

The After Party. This Costume portrays the climax of the Miss Universe Pageant held at Atlantis premier night club Aura you will see the ambience of this five star night club with an attractive ice carving with the disc jockey providing music escorted by the club hostess and cocktail waitresses

Dance with Dolphins This costume depicts a contestant from the pageant swimming with the dolphins at Atlantis.

Briland Sweet Hey! – This costume depicts the contestants’ journey to Harbour Island on the Bo Hingy – fast Ferry and their experience of a Bahamian sunset on the pink sands of Harbor Island while snacking on sea grapes.

Wonders of Atlantis – We’re under the sea! The aquarium is filled with beauties beyond compare! From beneath the crystal blue waters we have a shimmering parade of movement: iridescent rays of light erupt in an explosion of colour that sets the backdrop for the lion fish, the green sea turtles and the seahorses.

Contingent to Inagua – Experience the hypnotic pink pastels of the flamingos as did the contestants in Inagua

Da Biggest Event – Witness the most anticipated event of the pageant… The Junkanoo Extravaganza held on the Cable Beach Strip- The Dancers, the drummers, the bellers, and off course what’s junkanoo without the brass and the choreograph.

Island Hop Scotch – From Nassau to Freeport, Freeport to Abaco, Abaco to Bimini, and Bimini to Eleuthera. The Miss Universe contestants experienced a glorious Island Hop Scotch.
So fasten your seat belts and return your folding trays and chairs to the upright position,
as the Island Hop Scotch costume depicts the transport of beauty and elegance from island to island.

Choreograph Section one
These dancers depict various aspects of the pageant with a touch of the marine life of the Bahamas. The costume is a combination of evening wear, the National Costume competition and marine life. The ladies are wearing an evening gown with a shell backdrop and a gorgeous Tiara headpiece similar to the Miss Universe crown, bracelets, gloves and other accessories.

These dancers depict the many marine treasures which can be seen at the Venue Atlantis and throughout the islands of the Bahamas. The costume depicts the fins of a fish and shells. The ladies are also wearing an elaborate shell headpiece, footwear, bracelets and other accessories.
Brass musicians – “Guardians of the Deep’
These musicians announce the commencement of the live television broadcast with a triumphant fanfare. They Guard the venue and the marine treasures of Atlantis. The costume comprises fins, shells and arm bands and a helmet.
Lead Cow Bell Ringers – The Atlantean
The lead beller costume portrays an Atlantean in full regalia. Atlantis was believed to be the most advanced civilization centuries ago and was inhabited by persons who spent most of their time beneath sea. The Atlanteans developed apparel and instruments to complement their aquatic lifestyle that consists of fins and armour. The seahorse was revered for its beauty and mystique. The seahorse above the Atlantean was often used in Atlantean art and architecture. The Atlanteans are ecstatic as they play hosts to the most beautiful girls from around the world
Cow Bell Ringers – two
These costumes depict a shell on backdrop of the aquamarine waters of the Bahamas. Fins and armour are also visible including arm bands and leggings.

These costumes comprise an elaborate seahorse head piece, a skirt with various shells found throughout the Bahamas and leggings.

Miss Universe Swimsuit competition
Who would have thought that in 1952, a local “bathing beauty” competition spearheaded by Catalina Swimwear in Long Beach, CA would have transformed into an international annual tradition with countless young women around the world vying to become a part of Miss Universe history? The pageant has evolved into a powerful, year-round, international organization that advances and supports opportunities for these young women.
The delegates who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display unique characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals, who compete for country and with hope of advancing their careers, personal and humanitarian goals.
Going back a few months, I remember when I saw Stefanía (Miss Venezuela) for the first time. I immediately told a friend: “Can a woman be that stunning”. His response was: “You are crazy; there are no back-to-back victories in Miss Universe”. And I thought: “Not yet”, and the rest as they say, “is now history”.
Global beauties converge on a tiny island chain in the Atlantic called the Bahamas their final stop ATLANTIS “ Home of the Gods” .Where they were hosted by a nation at the most prestige’s hotel property in this hemisphere .
Our costume depicts the Swimsuit Competition segment of the pageant. Watch as we display beauties from around the world in the back-drop of Mythical ATLANTIS, with depictions of the great Sea Horse, Pegasus and the Goddess of the Sea .You will also see Donald J. Trump himself introduce the winner while aloft a majestic shell chariot being pulled by dolphins. Our global beauties will be dressed in designer swimsuits designed by BSC swimwear Thailand.
Is your heart beating fast, are you out of breath, can you feel the excitement in the air when the announcer says, “And the Winner IS”.

Lead Costume- Two
“Beauty in Paradise-ATLANTIS”
As millions around the globe viewed the magnificent splendour of Miss Universe 2009 live from the Bahamas, they were all intrigued by the beauty and wonders of the Caribbean and the spirit of the lost city-ATLANTIS; the crown jewel of tourism in the Bahamas.
The Lead Costume “Beauty in Paradise-ATLANTIS” depicts The Goddess of Atlantis upon The Lion Fish escorting three of the beauty Queens of the world to that Lost City and the Enthronement Hall deep within the ruins, thereby to be enthroned as Miss Universe, Miss Personality and Miss Congeniality. All of the Beauties were transformed into the mystical mermaids adding to the distinct blend and glamour that the Bahamas brings to the world; an experience that is ‘one and only’.

‘Masterminds of the Pageant – A journey for the Crown’
They came from every corner of the earth.. Queens with crowns from each country, crowns that sparkled and shone , though not as brightly as their beautiful smiles and angelic faces. The excitement of the people, the eagerness to win, the anxiety to be at their very best made the very air thick with expectancy as these queens took a firm hold on their passport to paradise and became contestants in the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant. They journeyed to the country known to many as the “jewel” of the Caribbean to compete for the greatest jewel of all, the crown of Miss Universe… The crown of peace!
Sitting atop this costume is the crown of peace. Beneath its striking beauty is a beauty of our own, our queen, Miss Bahamas Universe, Kira Sherman, the hostess of the pageant. Her radiance only bested by the golden sun that is situated behind her in the backdrop. Wearing her native costume. Miss Sherman is placed between two pillars of Atlantis with the Bahamian flag draped behind her on stage. More prominently placed are the ‘masterminds of the pageant’ these are the people directly responsible for bringing this major event to the white sandy shores of The Bahamas.
A Rolls Royce, driven by Commodore Clifford Scavella, Commander of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force;
Transports the car full of VIP’s pass by a lush garden scene that features Flamingos, Green Bahama Parrots, Yellow Elder flowers and Hibiscus. These Masterminds in all their pomp and pageantry are leaving the Government House ceremony and are on their way to Atlantis. Seated in the Vehicle are: Vernice Walkine, Ministry of Tourism’s Director General , Sol Kerzner, Chairman of the Atlantis Resort; The Hon. Arthur D. Hanna, Governor General of the Bahamas; Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, Minister of Tourism & Aviation; Donald Trump, Sponsor of this Miss Universe pageant.
And then suddenly, amidst all of the excitement, there erupts an explosion of sound and light as fireworks spiral into the air in celebration of the culmination of the event. It’s a passport to paradise! The Crown of peace is won… Miss Universe emerges Victorious!
Music
Our music presentation will comprise ‘a tribute to “Bahamian Music’. During the entire month of August the contestants, media and guests of the pageant experienced the best of Bahamian music as performed by Bahamian musicians. Bahamian music is experiencing a rebirth in the Bahamas and the exposure that our music and entertainers received during the weeks of the pageant were priceless! Contemporary Bahamian Music and Junkanoo themed music will be performed.
Performance
During the many stops that the delegates to Miss Universe made during their weeks in the Bahamas they were given a taste of Bahamian culture, in particular, dance unique to the Bahamas including a Junkanoo rush-out at Cable Beach. We will portray these dancers including those performed and enjoyed by the contestants in our performance.
Conclusion
This year the Crowns of ‘Miss Universe’ represented Peace, Unity and Hope all characteristics which we embrace in ‘The Islands of the Bahamas. As the Bahamas continues to grow, tourism will continue to be the engine that drives our economy. We support the efforts of the ministry of Tourism to promote the Bahamas and to put our ‘best forward’. We therefore take this opportunity to encourage all Bahamians to take advantage of all opportunities afforded to us, such as the hosting of ‘Miss Universe 2009’, to continue to promote the positive aspects of the Bahamas because –
“Tourism is every Bahamian’s business”.
The Success of Miss Universe 2009 proved
‘It’s still better in the Bahamas’.
